Empowering Businesses. Inspiring Investors.

The Barbados Stock Exchange (BSE) is committed to reshaping Barbados’ financial landscape by bridging the gap between local enterprise and domestic capital. By creating opportunities for businesses to access equity financing and empowering more Barbadians to invest, we are helping to build a stronger, more resilient economy.

In a recent interview, Terry Belgrave, Operational Supervisor and Business Development Lead at the Barbados Stock Exchange (BSE), shared how the Innovation & Growth Market (IGM) is supporting that mission by providing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with greater access to equity financing while creating new opportunities for Barbadians to participate in the country’s economic growth.

Unlocking Patient Capital for Local SMEs

For decades, many small business owners across the region have relied almost exclusively on commercial bank financing. While debt financing remains an important source of capital, fixed repayment schedules can place immense strain on growing businesses – particularly during uncertain economic conditions.

At the BSE, we believe equity financing offers a more flexible alternative. As Terry explains:

“Equity capital gives you patient capital. If you sell the right story and investors believe in your vision and business model, they lend you money… but it’s not on a fixed schedule like a bank.”

To address this challenge, we created the Innovation & Growth Market (IGM) specifically for SMEs. The IGM offers a tailored, flexible framework that makes public listing achievable for smaller companies without onerous burdens.

Expanding Investment Opportunities

The Innovation & Growth Market is helping to create opportunities for both businesses seeking capital and Barbadians looking to invest in the future of the local economy.

As Terry highlighted, there are billions of dollars sitting in low-yield bank deposits. Encouraging more people to invest even a portion of those savings in local businesses has the potential to unlock growth, create jobs and strengthen Barbados’ economy.

Making investing more accessible is also a priority. BSE Mobile, our upcoming trading app, will empower users to easily execute trades and access timely market data from their mobile devices.

Breaking Down Common Myths

Despite these opportunities, lingering misconceptions about the stock market continue to discourage both businesses and individuals from participating. During the interview, Terry addressed two of the most common myths.

Myth: “I’ll lose control of my company if I list.”

Reality: Listing on the IGM does not mean giving up majority control. Companies typically make only 20–25% of their shares to the public. This, allows founders to retain full operational control while inviting customers, employees and members of the wider community to share in their success.

Myth: “I need thousands of dollars to start investing.”

Reality: Building wealth does not require a large upfront investment. By investing consistently over time through approaches such as dollar-cost averaging, ordinary Barbadians can gradually build an investment portfolio.

Continuing the Journey

Demystifying these concepts through education is key to our strategy. Throughout 2026 and 2027, the BSE is hosting a series of interactive online clinics designed to equip entrepreneurs and aspiring investors with the knowledge and confidence needed to take their next steps.

Following our first session, “The BSE and You,” we are pleased to announce our next online clinic:

Are You Investment Ready?

Date: Thursday, 15 October 2026
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

The upcoming session will explore the fundamentals of investing, help individuals assess their readiness to build long-term wealth, and support businesses in determining whether equity funding is the right path for growth.
